Gorillas finish sweep of Blue Tigers in baseball

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Lincoln baseball team fell 11-1 to Pittsburg State on Saturday to finish on the wrong side of a three-game sweep.

In a battle of the bottom two teams in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings, the Gorillas put some distance between themselves and the Blue Tigers. Pittsburg State is now 9-24 overall and 4-20 in the MIAA, while Lincoln is 1-33 and 0-24.

The Gorillas put up the game's first run in the third inning and added another in the fifth, both times on groundouts.

Then came the sixth inning, during which Pittsburg State scored five runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter. A bases-loaded double by Brett Macary was the biggest blow. The Gorillas added a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings - on a two-run double and an RBI double and single, respectively.

Lincoln's first run didn't come until the top of the eighth, when Kolton Clark scored on the game's lone error.

The Blue Tigers were held to just three hits, two by Dillon Walker and a third by Leban Petzoldt.

Zach Maskill (0-8) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on six hits, four walks, a hit by pitch and three wild pitches. Daniel Castillo threw an inning of relief, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. Caleb Thomas pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowing a walk, and Tyler Roberts gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning of work.

Lincoln, which hasn't won a game since Feb. 21 against Truman State, returns home for a game against Lindenwood on Wednesday before hosting Central Oklahoma in a three-game series.
