Your Opinion: Neighbors came together

Dear Editor:

I have never been more proud of the people of Jefferson City. Living here in the Hayselton Drive, Boonville Road, Allen Drive, Beverly, Riverwood and Circle Drive area I have felt the support of citizens from all across Jefferson City and out into the county.

The citizens of this area are a remarkable group of people. I believe I speak for many when I tell you how much we appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and words of support for our neighborhood. I want to mention a special thanks to our local media for helping bring an important local issue to the front page.

You can fight city hall. You won't always win. There was difficult work done by the members of the City Council, Mayor Tergin and many members of city staff. The council listened to both sides of the issue concerning a new intersection from Hayselton Drive to access a new development. The City Council then made a difficult decision to approve a very unpopular intersection. That is what they've been elected to do.

Many still disagree with that decision; however we select people to make the decisions that they believe will make Jefferson City a better place for the future.

I am sure that the legal fights are not finished in this case. I am sure there will be much talk over coffee about this issue and why the decisions were made. I am also sure that this issue has bonded a neighborhood together better than it was before. I don't recommend the way we did it, but I want to encourage citizens across Jefferson City, Cole and Callaway counties to get to know your neighbors. Work with them on a project. Get to know your older neighbors and your new ones as well. Our Hayselton Drive neighborhood has citizens from 100 years old to expectant mothers. We have young struggling renters all the way to owners who have lived at the same address for nearly 50 years.

Our struggle to preserve our neighborhood has been good for us. And as time passes and hurts heal we will remain solid with our neighbors and find that we can make a better way forward.
