Your Opinion: Hayselton support appreciated

Dear Editor:

I would like to publicly thank all of our neighbors and friends around the city who supported the efforts in the Hayselton neighborhood against the access to a subdivision on a hairpin curve on our street.

While the decision Monday night was not in our favor, I am grateful to the many people who took the time to sign the petition, put a sign on their property and speak to so many of us in solidarity.

Thank you to council members, Ken Hussey, Rich Milhalevich, Laura Ward and Glen Costales--who heard our voices and voted against the proposal. Thanks also to Mayor Tergin who voiced her opposition. Many emergency and safety personnel, trash haulers, lawn service workers weighed in - off the record - that this was a "crazy" place to put a street. The editorial in this paper opposed to this access was appreciated. The support from the objective community is a testament to the gravity and importance of our concerns and considerations over reckless and short sighted urban planning.

The developers bought property on West Main in 2005, razed an historic home and intended to make the access to a subdivision at that location. That should have continued to be the plan - as it was approved in 2005. I congratulate the developers-for their thorough presentation in convincing city staff and six council members that their Hayselton access has merit; it is certainly less expensive for the developers.

I was sorry our Third Ward council representative, Bob Scrivner, chose to not only vote for the project but to also actively lobby and contribute to the developers' success.

In the end our efforts to speak about safety, property rights, individual rights and smart urban planning failed. In the end our petitions, voices and hard work failed to preserve the safety of our street.

Neighbors have become friends in the process - a decided benefit to this unfortunate outcome. And we all hope that this decision made by city staff and the council is not one filled with trouble and regrets in the future.
