Our Opinion: Observing a continuum of volunteerism

News Tribune editorial

"We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don't know."

W. H. Auden, poet

That quip by the Anglo-American poet and playwright is amusing, but our experiences and observations suggest an answer.

Time and again, our staff has encountered and reported local examples of "others" who were helped and now have joined the ranks of the helpers.

National Volunteer Week - observed through Saturday - is an opportune time to say thank you to the helpers who lift others and perpetuate the cycle of service.

Among the examples:

• We have featured adult leaders of youth groups who continue the efforts of their former mentors in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, YMCA and other groups that serve young people.

• Although Habitat for Humanity requires some participation by prospective homeowners, we continue to find and quote past recipients of Habitat homes volunteering at new job sites.

• Through groups including the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service and Council for Drug Free Youth, victims of domestic violence and recovering alcoholics and drug addicts share their experiences and transitions to healthier, meaningful lifestyles.

Volunteering isn't simply helping "others," it is helping them find a physical, mental and spiritual foundation that moves them to serve.

Each volunteer is unique. The common denominator is all share a desire to help others.

And, whenever the helped become the helpers, the continuum of volunteer service extends along its infinite path.
