KCP&L buys power from 2 new wind facilities

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City Power & Light Co. has purchased another 500 megawatts of power from two new wind facilities in northwest Missouri.

The utility announced Thursday that it will build a 200-megawatt farm in DeKalb County east of St. Joseph. Another 300-megawatt farm is being developed in Atchison County near Tarkio.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1SEU3kj) KCP&L didn't disclose the financial details. The DeKalb County wind farm is expected to be operating by the end of the year, with the Atchison County project running by September 2017.

KCP&L says these are the first wind facilities it has constructed in its Missouri service territory. The utility has 20-year agreements with the wind farm developers.

With the new projects, KCP&L said its total wind energy system will be nearly 1,400 megawatts.
