Haskamp stepping down as Helias cross country coach

The Helias Crusaders and Lady Crusaders captured several state trophies during Mary Haskamp's time as head coach of the cross country and track teams.

But she's not sure how many. And she doesn't really care.

"It's about the kids, I don't worry about things like that," Haskamp said Thursday after she announced she would be stepping down as cross country coach after 28 seasons.

For the record, Helias won four total state titles under Haskamp, who spent 14 years with the track team before stepping down several years ago.

Haskamp said she made the decision to retire around Easter. She taught driver's education, which will not be offered at Helias starting next school year, although leaders at the school offered her a different teaching position.

"It's just time, just going to do some slowing down," she said. "I want to be able to set my own schedule.

"A lot of prayer, a lot of thought went into this decision I don't know if I've looked at all of the things I really needed to, but I believe this is the right decision for me."

Helias athletic director Brad Dempsey said the school will miss Haskamp.

"It's a huge loss for all of us because her heart is amazing, she's done so many great things here," Dempsey said. "She has worked with kids to make them better runners and better people.

"Our cross country team is a family and that's because of Mary. We were very blessed to have her here."

Haskamp was a 2007 inductee into the Missouri Track and Cross County Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

"Every summer, you think about not wanting school to start," Haskamp said. "But the first day of cross country, I was ready for it. The hardest part of this decision is leaving cross country. Getting to know the kids has been one of the best things about the job as coach.

"I miss them already."

One thing she won't miss? The dinners before every meet. Not the company, just the menu.

"We have a spaghetti dinner the night before every meet and that's the only time I ever eat it," Haskamp said. "That's wonderful and a great chance for everyone to get together, but I've gotten to where I can't even look at noodles."

Dempsey said there is no timetable for making a decision about the new head coach.
