Helias captures tennis title

HANNIBAL, Mo. - The Helias Lady Crusaders won every match they played while sweeping the singles and doubles flights to capture the title at the Hannibal Tournament on Saturday.

At No. 1 singles, Ashley Dowden posted wins against opponents from Hannibal (10-1), Kirksville (10-2) and Troy (10-1) to claim the title.

Abby Dowden won at No. 2, notching wins against Kirksville (10-6), Hannibal (10-3) and Troy (10-1).

At No. 3, Megan Oliver beat foes from Hannibal (10-2), Kirksville (10-6) and Troy (10-1).

Liz Conley won at No. 4, beating Troy (10-0), Hannibal (10-1) and Kirksville (10-8).

Catherine Conley was victorious at No. 5, downing Hannibal (10-0), Kirksville (10-3) and Troy (10-1).

At No. 6, Emmi Theroff beat Kirksville (10-2), Hannibal (10-2) and Troy (10-5).

The doubles team of Kayla Wolters and Kaitlyn Snyder beat Hannibal (10-7), Kirksville (10-7) and Troy (10-1).

Anna Theroff and Martina Lorang teamed up for wins against Troy, Hannibal and Kirksville by identical 10-3 scores.

Haley Goldman and Grace Twehous beat Hannibal (10-1), Kirksville (10-1) and Troy (10-4).

The team of Maggie Jones and Maria Martinho dropped Kirksville (10-1), Hannibal (10-2) and Troy (10-3).

Helias will host a district semifinal match at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against the winner of Monday's match between Moberly and Mexico.
