BizBeat: Downtown Book & Toy turns new page with second location

Look for an old Jefferson City favorite in a new location when Downtown Book & Toy 2 opens in Capital Mall next month.

The bookseller that also specializes in children's board games and toys will add the store in the mall's JCPenney wing to its current location at 125 E. High St.

"The mall is really doing a revitalization, and we think that our store is the perfect match to bring more people both directions, both to the mall and to downtown," said manager Cece McClure. "There's a whole group of people in Jefferson City that don't come downtown, so we thought this would be a good chance for those people to see what we have to offer."

McClure will continue to manage both locations alongside assistant manager Lisa Gill, and an expanded staff will rotate between the two stores.

The Capital Mall store will feature an inventory similar to the downtown store's with a slightly different setup. The doubled-down approach also will allow more convenience for some customers.

"If you're a west-ender and you shop at the mall most, and you want something at the High Street store, we will be going back and forth," McClure said. "We want it to be customer service-oriented."

Downtown Book & Toy 2 will open Oct. 10. It will be open seven days a week and maintain the same operating hours as Capital Mall.

Cowley Distributing, which owns Downtown Book & Toy, also operates stores in Osage Beach, Rolla, Lebanon, Sedalia, Lee's Summit, Clayton and Quincy, Illinois.
