Prep Softball: Lady Jays start 2-0 in Classic

COLUMBIA - The Jefferson City Lady Jays advanced to the semifinals of the Kewpie Classic with a pair of victories Friday.

Jefferson City opened with an 8-7 win against Francis Howell. Hannah Hirschvogel, Alyssa Schulte and Taylor Dey all had two hits in the win. Schulte and Day drove in two runs.

Schulte went the distance to get the win, allowing 10 hits and striking out four. Five of the runs were earned.

In the nightcap, a two-run home run by Gabi McGinty in the bottom of the fifth inning ended what was an 11-0 victory against Kirksville.

McGinty finished with two hits in the game, as did Katie Tambke, Alex Gilliland and Lauren Neubauer. Neubauer drove in three runs, while Tambke scored twice. Schulte drove in three runs.

Mychael Jett was the winning pitcher, scattering two hits. She struck out four.

Jefferson City (11-6) will face Troy at 12:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.
