KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City, Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals are planning a two-phase project to offer sports fields and an indoor training facility to teach urban youth sports and life skills.
Mayor Sly James, Royals General Manager Dayton Moore and MLB officials announced plans for the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy on Friday.
The first phase will spend $6.5 million to build four fields, ranging in size from softball to major-league. It includes enhancements to a 21-acre park near the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The second phase would construct an indoor facility with a full-sized infield, batting cages, classrooms and office space.
The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/1NS5FRT) fundraising for the first phase is complete. The first phase is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016.
