Lee Child has another winner with "Make Me," his latest Jack Reacher tale.
All the elements that readers have come to expect from a Lee Child book are in place: the wandering man who stumbles onto a conspiracy because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time; the gorgeous woman he teams up with to solve the puzzle and save the day; and evil people who aren't smart enough to stay away from him.
Reacher steps off a train in the small town of Mother's Rest simply because he's intrigued by the cryptic name. He meets a woman who was hoping that her partner was going to get off the train. Special Agent Chang came to Mother's Rest after Special Agent Keever called and asked her to come. But where is he? Reacher cannot resist a mystery or a beautiful woman, so he decides to stay and help her.
The entire town seems to be against them finding answers, but threats and even physical violence haven't deterred Reacher yet, and the people responsible for Keever's disappearance have no idea whom they are up against.
The climax is shocking and grotesque - and also a fantastic payoff for readers who will not figure out what truly has been going on.
There's a reason why Child is considered the best of the best in the thriller genre: He can take all these strange elements and cliches and make them compelling and original.
