Jefferson City restaurant inspections for August 2015

Jefferson City's Food Code requires food-service establishments be inspected at least once every six months.

The inspections note critical and non-critical violations. Critical violations are the more serious, as they are more likely to compromise food safety and cause health problems. Critical violations often concern improper food temperatures, either on a stove/grill or in holding areas after cooking or before cooking, such as in a refrigerator. They also could involve plumbing repairs, personal hygiene, people who are sick handling food or contamination, such as pest infestations.

Non-critical violations are more minor offenses, which could deal with cleaning/maintenance of floors, walls, ceilings, open waste receptacles, unshielded light bulbs in a food preparation area or a missing thermometer in a refrigerator.

The Food Code typically requires establishments to correct critical violations at the time of inspection when possible, or within a longer time frame not to exceed 10 days agreed upon with the regulatory authority. Establishments are required to correct non-critical violations by a date agreed to with the regulatory authority not to exceed 90 days from the time of inspection.

The August 2015 inspections noted:

Dollar General Store No. 1219, 1414 Missouri Blvd., one critical violation: several dented cans present on customer shelf - and seven non-critical violations: debris in tracks of Coca-Cola True cooler; spilled milk and food debris present in bottom of True cooler; drinks and other food items stored on floor and not elevated; strong odor present in customer restroom; no covered trash can present in combo customer restroom; True cooler with milk and eggs has torn and broken seals.

• Follow-up inspection: two non-critical violations: no covered trash can present in combo public restroom; True cooler with milk and eggs has torn and broken seals.

Everest Cafe and Bar, 2403 Missouri Blvd., three non-critical violations: shelves in walk-in cooler have food debris present; ice paddle for soda machine has food debris present; trash container in women's restroom is not covered.

Jimmy Johns, 128 E. High St., one non-critical violation: seals on make cooler for dine-in orders torn and broken.

Madison's Cafe, 216 Madison St., two non-critical violations: corners of prep line ceiling and walls show smoke and grease deposits; missing coved base under dish room sinks.

Mel's Country Cafe Inc., 2421 Industrial Drive, three non-critical violations: missing drain plug in garbage dumpster; dish sink prior to dish machine has leaks in it, plumbing loose underneath; servers' microwave roof and walk-in cooler fan soiled.

Mosers Discount Foods - Grocery, 2411 Missouri Blvd., three non-critical violations: loose food debris in bottom of reach-in freezer with pizzas, waffles and bagged frozen corn; food debris on shelf with bagged cereals; salsa cheese stored on floor near meat cases.

Papa Johns Pizza USA Inc., 2103 Missouri Blvd., three non-critical violations: broken seals on make table cooler doors; broken handle for make table lid; bottom of make table cooler has food debris present.

Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, 1722 Jefferson St., four non-critical violations: hole in wall by ice maker with exposed insulation showing; broken, moldy ceiling tile present in dry storage room; walls near walk-in cooler have dust hanging; employee restroom paper towel dispenser non-functional.

Red Lobster, No. 733, 3519 Country Club Drive, one critical violation: chill cabinet not holding temperature of 41 degrees or less - and three non-critical violations: bar ice scoop stored in ice box (should be stored separately for no bare-hand contact with ice); microwave in back of kitchen had food debris present; scoop in dipping well had food debris present (corrected on site).

• Follow-up inspection: no violations.

Sawaddee, 103 E. High St., no violations.

Scholastic, 2931 E. McCarty St., four non-critical violations: soiled/moldy wiping cloths present in cabinet under soap dispenser; dust hanging from ceiling in front service prep area; dead insect accumulation in light fixtures; food debris/food items present on floor under shelves in walk-in cooler.

Spectators Sports Bar and Billiards, 232 E. High St., one non-critical violation: epoxy floor covering coming up or cracking in kitchen.

Steak "N Shake, 2519 Missouri Blvd., three critical violations: insufficient sanitizer in dish machine to test; foods in Puck cooler above 45 degrees F; foods in front dress table above 50 degrees F - and eight non-critical violations: men's restroom vanity badly cracked and can leak onto floor; walls and floor under dish station soiled; following items soiled with dust, food debris, grease, etc.: walk-in cooler shelving, walk-in cooler trays, walk-in cooler fan and cover, grill cook display monitor, servers' bulk milk cooler inside, servers' malt blender, can opener, Puck cooler inside, fryer ceiling tile; door gaskets torn on multiple refrigerating units; trash can in employee restroom has no lid; coved base vinyl strip missing or loose throughout back; quarry tile coming up between walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer leaving hole; multiple food items and boxes stored on walk-in freezer floor.

Barnes and Noble Cafe, 3535 Missouri Blvd., Suite 101, one non-critical violation: cutting boards in front of soup well and next to turbo chef oven have deep grooves in them.

Taco Bell No. 382, 2605 Missouri Blvd., four non-critical violations: food debris present under food steamer; food debris present in bottom of chip warmer; fans in walk-in cooler have dust accumulation; floors in walk-in freezer have debris present.

Veit's Pub & Grill, 2314 Lorenzo Greene Drive, two non-critical violations: food residues present on kitchen walk-in cooler wire shelving and gasket of shed upright freezer soiled; gap present between stainless wall covering near hood and wall underneath.

Wal-Mart Supercenter No. 5477 - Grocery/Dairy, 401 Supercenter Drive, no violations.

Zesto Drive-In South, 1730 Jefferson St., no violations.

Schulte's Fresh Foods - Deli, 1904 Southwest Blvd., five non-critical violations: need to organize walk-in cooler storage (close to cross-contamination issue with raw chicken); epoxy flooring becoming pot-holed or crumbling, especially in front of triple sink, service hot case line, behind fryers; hot case chicken at minimal temperature (corrected on site); diced meat and eggs above 41 degrees F but below 45 degrees F on salad bar; employee observed doing wash/sanitize/rinse, correct order is wash/rinse/sanitize.

Mosers Discount Foods - Meat, 2411 Missouri Blvd., six non-critical violations: employee not wearing hair restraint while cutting meat; walk-in cooler vent covers have accumulation of dust and debris; plumbing pipe over cutting table has peeling paint present; open employee drink stored on counter next to wrapping station; bottom of open coffin case containing turkeys, pork hocks, etc., has debris present; wrapping stations have debris present.

Mosers Discount Foods - Produce, 2411 Missouri Blvd., three non-critical violations: debris on bottom shelf of open display case; loose vegetables and fruits under shelving in walk-in cooler; no paper towels present at hand sink in produce room.

Wal-Mart Supercenter No. 5477 - Bakery, 401 Supercenter Drive, one non-critical violation: rinse temp gauge on pan washer reading below required 185-200 degrees F.

Jefferson City Country Club - The Grill, 516 S. Country Club Drive, two non-critical violations: dust accumulation on ceiling tiles by dishwasher hood and concession area; in-use wiping cloths not stored in sanitizer.

Root Cellar Grocer, 306 E. High St., six non-critical violations: some single-service items (cups, lids, etc.) stored on floor upstairs and downstairs; both restroom doors stand open; front hand sink paper towels not in dispenser; utensils and containers at salad bar not presented handle first to customers; foods in Adcraft dress table above 41 degrees F; food (nut) samples at register not protected from customer handling.

Knights of Columbus, 1822 Tanner Bridge Road, one non-critical violation: no paper towels at hand sink.

Days Inn, 2100 Jefferson St., no violations.

Starbucks, 3721 W. Truman Blvd., one non-critical violation: seals on both Beverage Air coolers torn.

Kingdom Kids Daycare, 2113 Schotthill Woods Drive, no violations.

Pumpkin Patch Preschool & Childcare LLC, 2500 Country Club Drive, one critical violation: sanitizer used to clean table not at right concentration.

Colton's Steakhouse, 2415 Missouri Blvd., two critical violations: glass cleaners and degreasers stored improperly; potentially hazardous food product not at correct cold holding temperature in prep coolers - and seven non-critical violations: disposable paper towels not present at bar hand sink; "employee must wash hand" signs not present in restrooms; floors/walls in dish room not clean; floors have trash/food debris present under bar coolers and meat work table; ceiling tiles discolored in back kitchen area; base coving missing in sections in dry goods store room; meat room hand sink has water leak.
