Your Opinion: Parks director praised

Dear Editor:

I have had the good fortune to work as a volunteer with Bill Lockwood since the early 1990s for two commission terms, two years president and currently as Parks and Recreation Foundation president. Therefore, I am able to say that Bill is the most professional person I have had the good fortune to know.

His vision, diplomacy, financial expertise and downright passion for the parks system and Jefferson City are amazing to me.

It seems very unfortunate that the city is losing these characteristics at such a critical time in the development of the wellness/community center. I can only hope the parks commissioners realize what they are losing and are able to find someone who can manage a department so vital to our community. In the meantime, there is a top-notch staff to "carry the ball" to get this important work done along with Bill.

Another question which I would like to see answered is why the third vacancy on the commission has not been filled by the mayor. By not appointing someone new to this term it throws off the commissioner rotation according to the by-laws as I remember them.

I could continue to go on extolling the merits of Bill Lockwood, his staff and the excellent parks system we are fortunate to have, but one has only to look around town to see what he has accomplished in his 33 years here. His will be very large shoes to fill.
