Your Opinion: Hypocritical Kentucky clerk is no hero

Dear Editor:

This is in reference to Kentucky's elected county clerk Kim Davis and her refusal to issue marriage licenses that are contrary to her "Apostolic Church" beliefs.

Clearly, Davis believes that religious law should rule over secular law. Seems like Osama bin Laden shared a similar belief, as do the Taliban and other religious extremists. Davis was not jailed because of religious freedom. She was jailed because she wanted the government to force others to practice her cherry-picked religious beliefs.

Davis' crusade to preserve the "sanctity of marriage," "Under God's Authority" seems hypocritical at best. The New Testament has a lot to say about marriage, adultery and divorce. Among the Ten Commandments there is even that pesky commandment about adultery. Clearly it was never meant to be taken seriously. The details from public records of Davis' divorces and her four marriages would make even Jerry Springer's head spin.

Most orthodox faith traditions take the New Testament commands regarding marriage and divorce very seriously. Had someone of the RC Church been county clerk at the times Davis applied for her four marriage licenses, perhaps she herself should have been denied marriage "under God's authority."

Since Davis believes religious laws should rule over secular laws, our hypothetical county clerk would be faced the issue of which of her four marriages is actually valid in the eyes of God. Additionally, according to church doctrine, if her current husband is not her husband in the eyes of God, she must leave this relationship as it is adulterous ... so much to consider in deciding who gets a marriage license "under God's authority."

Sorry, Ms. Davis, you are no hero. You may call secular law evil and godless. However, it was secular law that finally forced the church to stop sweeping pedophilia under the rug. We are a country of many religions. I do not want the Torah, the Quoran or any one of the many cherry-picked versions of the Bible to dictate our laws. Let's not forget that the Westboro Baptist Church considers its beliefs to be "Christian."
