Stylist and salon owner Katherine Wakefield has returned to the beauty business in Jefferson City after closing her previous salon a year ago.
Wakefield, formerly of Backstage Barbers on East High Street, opened Barber Mechanics and Salon at 601 Broadway St. in August.
The full-service salon offers men's haircuts and shaves, women's haircuts and hair coloring including ethnic hair styling, massage therapy, manicures and eyelash extensions.
Operating out of an original Broadway neighborhood home built in 1879, Barber Mechanics and Salon is open for appointments and walk-ins 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.
After closing Backstage Barbers last summer because the building's owner terminated all commercial tenants' leases, Wakefield briefly left the hair and beauty industry to open a bar, Kat-A-Tonic, on Missouri Boulevard. That interest didn't pan out, but she said she's glad to be working as a stylist again.
As Wakefield and her staff continue to get Barber Mechanics and Salon up and running, they plan to add special promotions and programs, including one called "Books and Barbers" on the third Saturday of every month for children whose families cannot afford haircuts to "purchase" a haircut by reading a book aloud. Wakefield estimates that program should be available by November.
