CALIFORNIA - Police say a man who emerged from his home early Friday morning with an assault weapon was shot twice by police officers who were trying to take the man into custody. The man is being treated in a Columbia hospital under guard.

According to a spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control, California police went to the residence in the 600 block of South Taylor Avenue about 1 a.m. in an attempt to arrest the man, who has not been identified by police, on outstanding warrants.

The man came out of the residence with what is believed to be an assault rifle, authorities said. The police officers fired on the man, who sustained two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to University Hospital in Columbia for treatment.
