Your Opinion: Delusional Christians must stop the "pity party'

Dear Editor:

Mr. Sampson regales us with his wisdom again, in the Aug. 27 op-eds. His opinions can be positively delightful, on occasion.

He states "We are undergoing a major morality change in the USA ..." I disagree with the terminology. The United States (much of the world) is undergoing culture change, but the morality hasn't changed. I argue we are more moral now than we were when I was a child, a half a century ago. Oh, the Christians will cry gay marriage, Planned Parenthood, abortion, ... "the dead rising from the grave, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together." (Ghostbusters quote).

OK, why then did my great-grandfather carry a pistol on his hip out West? No, it wasn't the bears or rattlesnakes. There were bad people that would kill you for your boots.

Let us chat for just a few words about those poor discriminated against cake bakers from Oregon. They refused to bake a cake, and were fined a whopping $135,000. Oh my word, how horrid. No, not really. You see, Oregon has an anti-discrimination law that prohibits discrimination based upon sexual orientation. The baker in chief (Mr. Klein) was taking the order, and when he received two female names for the betrothed, refused to finish the order. The administrative law judge found the law had been violated. So, did Mr. Klein apologize and show understanding of the law? No, he went on the offensive, apparently believing the law doesn't apply to him, as he is Christian. In the process, he Facebook posted the name, address, phone number and email address of the plaintiffs. So, naturally, the "Christian community" started harassment, including death threats. Is that some of that fine, upstanding Christian morality I keep hearing about, Mr. Sampson?

The simple fact of the matter is that Christians became used to the self-delusion they were running the country and had a lock on morality. (It's not true, but change is painful.) Groups that have been denigrated in the past (gays in particular) have been fighting for their constitutionally given rights. Now that they are having modest success, too many Christians are caterwauling bloody murder. Oh woe is us, poor Christians! We are being set upon in every direction!

Oh, cry me a river. Stop the pity party.
