Feds indict Spinks in shooting

Leroy Jamase Spinks' reported involvement in an Oct. 14 shooting on Monroe Street has landed him in trouble with the federal justice system, too.

Tammy Dickinson, the U.S. Attorney for Western Missouri, announced Wednesday a federal grand jury in Jefferson City indicted Spinks, 29, Jefferson City, for illegally possessing a firearm because he's a convicted felon.

The indictment alleges Spinks was in possession of a Glock 9mm pistol on Oct. 14.

Cole County prosecutors charged him Oct. 15 with armed criminal action and discharging or shooting a firearm at or from a motor vehicle and at a person, vehicle, building or habitable structure.

Missouri's armed criminal action charge is an unclassified felony that requires a minimum three-year prison sentence.

The discharging/shooting charge is a Class B felony under state law, with a possible punishment including from five-15 years in prison.

Spinks and two others were charged after shots were fired at a home in the 800 block of Monroe Street at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14.

According to Jefferson City Police, authorities believe Spinks had a dispute with someone living in that block. As the intended victim sat on a front porch, Spinks reported shot at the individual several times from a vehicle.

A record check showed the gun Spinks used was stolen from Columbia.

Jefferson City police said Spinks originally is from Wisconsin and has an extensive criminal history with ties to weapons and robbery-related charges where victims feared repercussions if they testified against him.

Dickinson's news release didn't list a possible fine or prison term if Spinks is convicted of the federal charges.

In a separate release, Dickinson announced the Jefferson City federal grand jury also indicted Adrian Lamont Levy, 32, Columbia, for illegally possessing firearms and ammunition.

Wednesday's two-count indictment replaced an Aug. 19 federal indictment that charged Levy with possessing a Ruger 9mm pistol on July 4.

The new, superseding indictment includes the July 4 incident and also alleges on Sept. 2, Levy was in possession of a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol, a Kel Tec 9mm rifle, a Century Arms rifle, an SWD Incorporated pistol, a Glock 9mm pistol, a Metro Arms .45-caliber pistol and ammunition.

Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
