Nixon orders flags to half-staff to honor Marine

Gov. Jay Nixon on Friday ordered flags at all state buildings in Missouri to fly at half-staff Tuesday to "honor the bravery and sacrifice of Lance Corporal Dominic E. Schraft," 19, of Vienna - a Marine who died Oct. 5 at Camp Pendleton, California.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Vienna.

"Those who wear the uniform of our nation's military exemplify honor, duty and self-sacrifice," Nixon said, "and I ask all Missourians to join me in keeping the family of Lance Corporal Schraft in our thoughts and prayers at this time."

The governor also ordered flags at all state buildings in Maries County to continue to be flown at half-staff Wednesday through Oct. 26.

Schraft joined the Marines in August 2014, after graduating from Maries R-1 High School. He was a field radio operator assigned to Battery R, 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. He had not been deployed.

Schraft's awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Marine Corps officials are investigating his death.

The Riverside, California, Press-Enterprise and the Times of San Diego both reported Schraft's body was found at about 6 a.m. Oct. 5 at Camp Pendelton's Marksmanship Training Range 214. Lt. Colleen McFadden, a 1st Marines Division public affairs officer, told the newspaper reporters Schraft had a gunshot wound to the head.

She said the range is where the Marines go to develop their "fundamental combat marksmanship" skills.

The Camp Pendleton Federal Fire Department responded to the scene.

But it was unclear how Schraft was shot or under what circumstances - and no details have been released since Oct. 6.

After Schraft's death was reported, Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman asked Maries County businesses and residents "to place yellow ribbons on their buildings, residences or mailboxes to show their support for our local fallen soldier."
