Your Opinion: Words of Jeremiah relevant today

Dear Editor:

Will we in America allow the Potter to shape us into a pleasing peace of pottery to be used for honor or must we be broken and smashed before we can be reshaped into something useful again?

This is the question that comes to me as I watch all the chaos and corruption swirling around in America and the world.

In reading the words of Jeremiah in my daily Bible study, these words spoken by God through Jeremiah to the kingdom of Judah in Old Testament times are just as relevant to us in America today.

Jeremiah 18: says. "At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it; if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it. Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or plant it; if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it."

We need more Jeremiahs in America today giving these warnings, and we need leaders like King Josiah all over America who will listen to God's Word and understand the implications of these warnings for an entire nation.

King Josiah was young when he became king, but when the book of the Law of God was read to him, he was grieved because he understood the gravity of the judgment that disobeying the commands of a Holy God would bring on his nation, and he turned his heart to do right.

There is much political debate and disagreement on policy and ideology, but nothing short of a great national move of the Holy Spirit to pull back the curtain of deception, corruption, greed and rebellion will save America now and for our future generations.

More gun laws will not save a nation. The hearts in the nation must be changed.

God's just vengeance will fall on America for our idolatry and for the innocent blood that has been shed here just like it did in Israel and Judah, but just maybe we can delay that judgment for another generation if we will but turn around.

Don't we owe that to our children and grandchildren?
