WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored a stunning go-ahead goal early in the third period, set up another and the Washington Capitals opened the season with a 5-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

With the score at 2, Ovechkin got possession in his own zone, streaked down the ice and eluded defender John Moore by pulling the puck behind his right leg to his backhand. He dragged it back across his body in time to fire a wrist shot above goalie Keith Kinkaid's left shoulder.

Ovechkin later fed Marcus Johansson on a power play to make it 4-2, and Matt Niskanen scored an empty-net goal at 17:07.

Jason Chimera and Brooks Orpik also scored for the Capitals, and Braden Holtby made 21 saves.

Adam Henrique scored twice and Eric Gelinas had a goal for New Jersey. The Devils lost for the second time in two days.

RANGERS 5, BLUE JACKETS 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves and Oscar Lindberg scored twice to help New York beat Columbus for the second straight night.

Dominic Moore, Derick Brassard and Derek Stepan added a goal apiece in New York's home opener following two road victories to open the season. On Friday night in Columbus, the Rangers rallied to beat the Blue Jackets 4-2.

Lindberg has four goals in New York's first three games. He's the first rookie in franchise history to score at least one goal in a season's first three games.

Ryan Johansen and Boone Jenner scored for Columbus.

PANTHERS 7, FLYERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jaromir Jagr and Reilly Smith each scored twice and Vincent Trocheck had a goal and three assists in Florida's season-opening victory over Philadelphia.

Nick Bjugstad and Jussi Jokinen also scored goals, and Roberto Luongo made 39 saves.

The Panthers scored four goals on eight shots against Steve Mason in the first 6:46, a modern NHL record for the fastest four goals to start a season, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The 43-year-old Jagr is the NHL's career leader in opening-day points with 39. He has 13 goals and 26 assists.

Michal Neuvirth replaced Mason after the fourth goal and made 19 saves.

Mark Streit scored for Philadelphia.

BLACKHAWKS 4, ISLANDERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane and rookie Artemi Panarin each had a goal and two assists to help Chicago beat New York for the second straight night.

Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk added his first career NHL goal, and Brent Seabrook also scored as the Blackhawks cruised to their first home win of the season. Chicago also beat New York 3-2 in overtime on Friday night, spoiling the Islanders' Brooklyn debut.

Scott Darling made 28 saves for the Blackhawks in his first start of the season. He was working on a shutout before Cal Clutterbuck got a short-handed goal with 1:05 left in the third.

SHARKS 2, DUCKS 0

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Martin Jones earned the shutout in his first home start with San Jose and Patrick Marleau scored twice to lead the Sharks over Anaheim.

After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2003, the Sharks are off to a fast start in their first season under coach Peter DeBoer.

They opened with a dominating 5-1 win in Los Angeles and followed that up with a strong effort in the home opener against their other Southern California rival. Jones made 27 saves, and Marleau got his first two goals of the season. Frederik Andersen made 42 saves in the season opener for the Ducks. They have lost eight straight games in San Jose.

CANADIENS 4, BRUINS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Lars Eller scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had three assists for Montreal.

David Desharnais and Tomas Plekanec also scored for Montreal, and Carey Price finished with 19 saves. The Canadiens have won the last six meetings between the longtime rivals.

Montreal scored the first three goals and controlled the play throughout, outshooting Boston 38-21.

Boston goalie Tuukka Rask stopped 37 shots and kept the Bruins from being routed.

Matt Beleskey and Patrice Bergeron scored for Boston.

The Bruins are off to their first 0-2 start in 10 years. Boston played again without captain Zdeno Chara, who sat with an undisclosed upper-body injury.

WILD 3, BLUES 2

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Charlie Coyle scored twice, including 21 seconds Zach Parise's power-play goal late in the second period, and Minnesota picked up where it left off last spring against St. Louis.

Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves for the Wild, who eliminated the Central Division champion Blues in the first round of the playoffs last season in six games and held on for the win in their home opener despite being outshot 13-1 over the final 20 minutes.

St. Louis star Vladimir Tarasenko scored on a power play early in the third period, after a double-minor penalty on Thomas Vanek for high-sticking. Alexander Steen had the first goal for the Blues.

RED WINGS 4, HURRICANES 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Teemu Pulkkinen scored twice in the third period to lift Detroit past Carolina.

The Red Wings scored three goals in the third to erase a 2-1 deficit, with Pulkkinen tying it with 15:21 left and then adding the go-ahead goal with 13:24 remaining. Henrik Zetterberg had an early goal and assisted on Justin Abdelkater's insurance goal with 3:35 to play.

Carolina's Justin Faulk made it a one-goal game by scoring with 2.1 seconds left. Nathan Gerbe and Victor Rask also scored for Carolina.

Petr Mrazek made 43 saves for Detroit.

PREDATORS 2, OILERS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 31 saves to help Nashville beat Edmonton.

Craig Smith and Filip Forsberg scored for Nashville, which also won its opener against Carolina on Thursday. It was Rinne's 37th career shutout.

Edmonton's Connor McDavid, the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft, played 18 1/2 minutes and had two shots on goal. He struggled again on faceoffs, winning only two of 11. On Thursday night in his NHL debut, won three of 13 faceoff in a loss at St. Louis.

Playing in his 383rd NHL game, Rinne tied Tomas Vokoun's franchise record for appearances by a goalie. Rinne holds the franchise record for wins and shutouts.

COYOTES 2, PENGUINS 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Mike Smith shook off a hard collision to stop 27 shots, Jordan Martinook scored his first career NHL goal and Arizona held off Pittsburgh.

Smith was injured in the first period after being run into by teammate Brad Richardson, who was shoved from behind by Pittsburgh's Patric Hornqvist. Smith lay on the ice for a couple minutes, but stayed in and made some big saves down the stretch, giving him 67 in two games.

Tobias Rieder also scored for the Coyotes, who opened the season Friday night with a 4-1 victory in Los Angeles. Phil Kessel scored his first goal with Pittsburgh.

SENATORS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4, SO

TORONTO (AP) - Mike Hoffman had the decisive goal in the first shootout of the NHL season, giving Ottawa a victory over Toronto.

Kyle Turris, Alex Chiasson, Milan Michalek and Mark Stone scored in regulation for the Senators, and Craig Anderson made with 37 saves. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson had three assists.

The NHL moved to a 3-on-3 overtime for this season to cut back on shootouts, and the Senators and Maple Leafs played the first tiebreaker in the league's 19th game. Anderson had seven saves in OT.

Joffrey Lupul, Tyler Bozak, Peter Holland and Daniel Winnik scored for Toronto.

AVALANCHE 6, STARS 3

DENVER (AP) - Gabriel Landeskog scored twice in the third period, one 47 seconds after John Mitchell's tiebreaking goal, and Colorado beat Dallas.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, and Jarome Iginla and Erik Johnson also scored for Colorado, coming off a 5-4 loss to Minnesota on Thursday night.

Cody Eakin had two goals, and Mattias Janmark had his second tally in two games for Dallas.

LIGHTNING 4, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored his first goal of the season and Tampa Bay beat Buffalo.

Erik Condra, Nikita Kucherov and J.T. Brown also scored, and Ben Bishop made 24 saves.

Nicolas Deslauriers scored for Buffalo. Chad Johnson was beaten for all four goals filling in for injured starter Robin Lehner.

FLAMES 3, CANUCKS 2, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau scored 3:03 into a 3-on-3 overtime to lift Calgary past Vancouver.

After Calgary forward Mason Raymond stole the puck from Vancouver's Brandon Sutter, Gaudreau beat Ryan Miller with a quick shot for his first goal of the season.

Dougie Hamilton and Sean Monahan scored in regulation for the Flames, and Jonas Hiller made 28 saves.

Bo Horvat and Jared McCann, with his first NHL goal, scored for the Canucks.

The teams opened the season Wednesday night in Calgary, with Vancouver winning 5-1.
