Police: Gambling debt resulted in St. Louis County killing

WELLSTON, Mo. (AP) - A University City teenager has been charged in the killing of a 19-year-old, and authorities say a gambling debt led to the shooting.

Eighteen-year-old Jermaine McDaniels was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Police say McDaniels fatally shot Melvin Pogue Saturday night in Wellston, not long after Pogue attended homecoming activities at his alma mater, Normandy High School.

Police say the two had argued over a dice game debt.

McDaniels is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bail. He does not have a listed attorney.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is handling the investigation.
