CLUBB, Mo. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency has reached a proposed $35,000 settlement with two southeast Missouri landowners.
The agency announced Wednesday that the landowners didn't obtain a necessary permit before dumping fill material into a tributary of Turkey Creek in an attempt to build a lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered the Clean Water Act violation during an April 2014 inspection of the landowner's property near the town of Clubb in Wayne County.
The EPA says about 2,200 linear feet of stream were affected. As part of the agreement, the landowners will protect 4,870 linear feet of stream and almost 28 acres of adjacent land on their property from future development.
The settlement is subject to a 30-day public comment period before it becomes final.
