Your Opinion: Be aware of rules for bicyclists

Dear Editor:

With the increase in the number of cyclers in the city perhaps it would be wise if the paper would post the laws concerning bicycles. I've had some scary run-ins with bicycles over the last few years and think it is about time they know the laws so everyone can be safe on the road and sidewalks.

Here are just a few, a complete version can be found on http://mobikefed.org/content/missouris-bicycle-and-pedestrian-laws.

When on the road bicycles are to follow traffic they are to stay on the right side of the road. Bicycles must follow stop sign and stop light rules just like any other vehicle and cyclists must indicate their turns with hand signals. Bicycles are not allowed on sidewalks in business districts and where they are allowed pedestrians have right of way and cyclists need to give an audible signal that they are approaching before overtaking a pedestrian.

Hopefully people will start following the laws and make cycling safer for the riders and a lot less aggravating and nerve racking for drivers and pedestrians.
