"The Odd Couple' stays true to original play

The classic comedy "The Odd Couple" by Neil Simon is on the stage for The Little Theatre of Jefferson City.

Audiences will recognize it from the original stage play, the television series and the movie.

Directed by Tom Baker, the play is the story of two total opposites who try to live together and get along.

Oscar Madison lives in a messy apartment, which is probably why his wife left him. Felix Unger is fastidious, depressed and a "neat-nik." Also probably why his wife kicked him out.

The story unfolds as a group of guys are gathered for cards in Oscar's apartment.

The audience watches the relationship as the two transition and come together.

The differences between the messy Oscar and the neat Felix lead to many hilarious moments.

Baker directed the show for Capital City Players seven years ago and is taking a different approach this time.

"When I first directed the play, I tried to make it my own by giving it some different blocking and playing with the set," Baker said. "This time I am approaching it to make it as much like the original stage play as possible."

Baker said the cast is a combination of veterans and newcomers.

"Some of the cast members had been in shows only as chorus members or walk-ons," Baker said. "I wanted to give them a chance to develop their acting skills."

The cast includes Keith Enloe as Oscar, Greg Barnes as Felix, Don Otto as Roy, John Hopper as Murray, Jon Schwartz as Vinnie, Dan Zaiger as Speed, Jamie Waier as Gwendolyn and Jennie Wells as Cecily.

"As all Neil Simon shows, this is totally about pacing," Baker said. "That is what we are working on right now."

The set and other technical aspects are basic. Mark Wittenberger built the set and body mikes are not being used on the stage.

"We are going the old way and projecting," Baker said.

Megan Wadley is assistant director and Cassie Williams is production manager for the first time.

Another different facet of the show is a jazz combo that will play on the side of the stage beginning at 7 p.m. until curtain time. They will also play during set changes and after the show.

"I really enjoy this show and hope our audiences will relate to the basic relationship between these men," Baker said.
