Area teams compete at Capital City Cross Country Challenge

Several area teams participated Saturday in the Capital City Cross Country Challenge at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/RICK MCFARLAND-- 07/31/09-- Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24 leaves a Pulaski County Circuit Court after his arraignment in Little Rock Friday. Muhammad is accused of killing a U.S. Army private and wounding another outside a Little Rock recruiting office, June 1.

In Class 3-4, the Helias Lady Crusaders finished fifth, while the Crusaders were 13th.

The Lady Crusaders finished with 170 team points. That was the second best among Class 3 schools, trailing only team winner Ste. Genevieve.

Kayla Yanskey finished 12th overall in 19:53.82. That was sixth for Class 3 runners. Helias had all seven of its runners finish among the top 24 in Class 3.

In the boys race, Elliot Knernschield of Helias finished seventh in a field of 201 runners with a time of 16:33.90. He was second among Class 3 runners.

The Crusaders totaled 372 team points. Rockhurst was first with 83, while Liberty (109) and Marquette (169) rounded out the top three squads.

Helias was third among Class 3 squads, finishing behind Ste. Genevieve and Westminster Christian.

In the Class 1-2, the Fatima Lady Comets had the top three individuals on their way to capturing team honors.

Brianna Haller (19:01.77) was the individual champion, followed by Alyssa Struemph (20:14.01) and Katelyn Vanderfeltz (20:16.20). Madison Day of Fatima was 10th (21:120.05).

Fatima won the 12-team event with 36 points. Father Tolton was second with 76, while Whitfield was third with 100.

Blair Oaks was eighth with 185 points. Taylor Scott finished 16th to pace the Lady Falcons (21:49.19).

South Callaway was ninth with 198. Adrian Mann was the top finisher for the Lady Bulldogs, taking 13th (21:34.95).

Russellville was 11th with 262, led by Sydney Robertson (27th, 22:28.30).

Linn did not compete as a team, but Harley Nale finished 11th in 21:31.37 for the Lady Wildcats.

On the boys side, Fatima totaled 45 points to take second behind Springfield Catholic's 35.

Fatima teammates Hunter Hennier (fourth, 17:00.85), Alex Krieg (eighth, 17:27.11) and Logan Borland (10th, 17:41.11) claimed top-10 finishes.

Linn was fourth with 136 points. Noah Voss finished 18th in 18:07.17 for the Wildcats

Blair Oaks was sixth with 180 points as Jason Otto was eighth as an individual with a time of 17:29.07.

California was 11th with 284 points. Adam Burkett paced the Pintos, taking 31st (18:32.61).

South Callaway was 15th with 398 points. Daniel McDonald was 56th to lead the Bulldogs (19:22.74).
