11 tons of prescription drugs removed in take-back effort

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A drug take-back effort in the St. Louis and southern Illinois areas has removed more than 11 tons of unused prescription drugs.

Last month, the Drug Enforcement Administration and local police led the effort. DEA Special Agent in Charge James Shroba on Friday said 22,321 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted drugs were brought in region-wide.

Nationally, more than 700,000 pounds were collected.

Shroba says the take-back helps battle prescription drug abuse, which affects millions of Americans.
