Our Opinion: Share holiday creations with community

News Tribune editorial

The annual Christmas Home Decorating contest has become a tradition both for families and the community.

This year marks the 30th installment of the event where residential displays are shared through a community competition, tour map and "People's Choice" balloting.

In addition, this year's contest features a business category - "Best Business Lights Display."

The business competition joins the traditional residential categories, which have been renamed this year.

They are:

• The "Clark Griswold Award." Named for the character portrayed by Chevy Chase in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," the award will honor the most spectacular lighting display.

• The "Charlie Brown Award." Named for the simple, lovable cartoon character, the category is for displays that concentrate on simplicity to evoke the spirit of Christmas.

• The "Norman Rockwell Award." Formerly the Elegance category, the award recognizes tastefulness and beauty.

• The "Oh Holy Night Award." The award will honor the display that coordinates and focuses on a religious theme.

• The "TV Christmas Classics Award." Entries in this category will feature Christmas characters from TV and film, and the displays should involve themes from TV shows and movies.

The contest is sponsored by Jefferson City Parks and Recreation, News Tribune and Cottonstone Gallery. Entry forms and contest rules are available at all three locations and will be printed periodically in the News Tribune, including in today's edition.

The deadline to enter is Dec. 11.

A tour map of contest participants and "People's Choice" ballot will be printed in the Dec. 15 News Tribune. Preliminary and final judging will lead to the announcement of citywide winners on Dec. 27.

The annual Christmas Home Decorating Contest is a holiday opportunity to share family tradition and holiday creations with the community.
