According to a sheriff's department news release, deputies responded around 1 p.m. Saturday to a home near Route Z and Liddell Lane after the homeowner reported a suspicious person at the residence. The resident said an unknown man was knocking on the side of the house before going to the back, where the resident confronted the subject who then left in a car.

A deputy traveling to the home was almost struck head-on by a car matching the suspect's vehicle description near the intersection of St. Charles Road and Route Z. The deputy chased the car after the driver refused to stop.

The driver then crashed the car in the 10,000 block of Carter School Road and ran into nearby woods. A search team and police dog subsequently failed to find the suspect.

As a result of evidence recovered at the scene, the suspect has been identified as 27 year-old Clifford P. Helmka, who is currently being sought for careless and imprudent driving, resisting arrest, first-degree tampering and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.
