JCPD to motorists: Be sure to buckle up

The Jefferson City Police Department is strongly encouraging holiday travelers to buckle up.

In a media release, JCPD stated additional officers will be enforcing traffic laws today, with an emphasis on hazardous moving violations, including seat belt violations, child restraint violations and impaired drivers. The release stated the additional staffing is paid for through grants from the Missouri Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic and Highway Safety.

Today, the police also will be part of a statewide "Click it or Ticket" campaign to get more drivers to buckle up. The release states 20 percent of Missouri drivers are not wearing a seat belt and 63 percent of those killed in crashed in Missouri were not wearing a seat belt.

"We will be out there to remind you seat belts can - and do - save lives," said Chief Roger Schroeder.

The JCPD also reminds drivers that Black Friday will have heavy traffic volumes, asking drivers to be attentive and patient. Officers patrolling areas will strictly enforce laws against road rage or aggressive driving.

Travelers are encouraged to allow plenty of time for travel and to be prepared for any weather changes that could affect road conditions.
