Your Opinion: Coal is plentiful and dependable

Dear Editor:

Bob Watson's article in the Nov. 14 paper concerning the Sierra Club's urge to force Ameren to reduce coal use caught my eye. The tree huggers amuse me because they want things both ways. In the real world it just does not work that way.

Are we, they, prepared to do away with 80 percent of our energy in the state of Missouri? Well no we are not. Coal is the source of 80 percent of our state's energy. The great news is, this country has lots of coal. Without dependable energy this country's economy would and will collapse.

News flash for Sierra Club member Dane Kamin concerning their demands - neither the sun nor the wind can be depended on. At times the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow. There are no batteries on planet earth that will store enough energy to supply power to millions of people. This alternative so called "renewable energy" may be plausible for certain temperate parts of the country, I'll give them that. But when it's 10 below zero in Missouri, which is not a temperate climate, when I hit the heat, I want it to come on whether the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

Kamin inferred that with only .02 percent of Ameren's generation coming from solar a grammar school kid would not get a "participation award." First I don't believe in make-believe awards. Second, every time I hit the switch my lights come on and for me that's 100 percent participation.

The only promise that Obama made openly was to put the coal business out of business. Missouri and two dozen other states are challenging the EPA's so called Clean Power Plan in court. My question to Kamin is this: who are all these people that want dirty air and water? Or do you just know what's best for us?
