Your Opinion: Exchange would promote equality

Dear Editor:

The recent events at MU bring to light racism and segregation in the Mid Missouri college system. The racial segregation has been going on for so long that we, in Central Missouri, think of it as perfectly normal. For years MU has always been thought of as the "White" college, where whites and liberal elites send their children to be educated.

It receives large donations and generous government funding. On the other hand Lincoln University has always been referred to as the "Black" college, where only blacks and those who could not get into or afford to go to MU.

Like in the 1950s this segregation needs to end and like the 1950s forced desegregation is the only answer. Fifty percent of the black administration, faculty and students from Lincoln should be exchanged with an equal number of white administration, faculty and students from MU. Funding and donations also need to be shared equally between the two campuses.

On all campuses anything that promotes segregation based on classifications of race, sex, orientation and religion should be removed. Example: facilities that are for one race only, or any facility or organization that is exclusive for one classification. This would ensure equality as all students would share the same accommodations and facilities and would increase interaction between students of different classifications. If we want true equality then we need to end organizations that promote segregation.
