Committee recommends chamber contract renewal

The Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce has been recommended to continue as the city's economic development agency.

At the Council Committee on Administration meeting Monday, City Attorney Drew Hilpert said it was time to renew the city's contract with the chamber for economic development services, noting it was the third renewal in a five-year contract.

The chamber receives $185,000 from Jefferson City and $150,000 from Cole County for economic development services, and each contract must be renewed annually.

Hilpert said such a renewal normally would go on the City Council's consent agenda, meaning it is generally approved without discussion, but opted to bring it to committee after a brief discussion last year about potentially bidding out the city's economic development services.

First Ward Councilman Jim Branch, who also serves as committee chair, said he had not heard any recent talk of bidding out the services.

Fourth Ward Councilman Glen Costales asked if it was possible to have some type of base pay and pay incentives for every job the chamber successfully attracts to the area.

"That's something to think about," said City Administrator Steve Crowell.

The committee then unanimously approved a motion to move the contract renewal to the full City Council for approval.
