Child playing with lighter starts house fire

A child playing with a lighter caused a house fire Monday night in Jefferson City.

According to fire department reports, the fire at 1409 East Miller Street was called in just after 9 p.m.

The initial call was for a report of a small fire on a bed in a bedroom.

However, when fire fighters arrived on the scene they found significant smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure.

All occupants, two adults and three children, were able to get out safely.

The fire was found to have started in a back bedroom.

Fire officials estimated half of the structure suffered fire damage and ninety percent of the contents were destroyed from smoke and heat.

There was also heat damage to houses of both side of the structure. Both homes had melted siding.
