Your Opinion: Congress deserves low grades

Dear Editor:

At the risk of being personally attacked by one of the right-wing conservatives that submit letters to this column on a regular basis, I would like to offer my opinion on the current Republican Congress. According to recent polls, most Americans have a low opinion of Congress including many Republicans.

Paul Ryan the new House speaker said that before he would take the position he would have to protect the time he wants to spend with his family. When asked if he would support legislation that would give working families in America the same protection for their family time, he said he would not do that. As new House speaker he posted the work schedule for Congress for the next year. They will work less than 112 days next year and next year their August recess will start in mid-July.

Paul Ryan has gone on record that his Congress will not cooperate with the Obama administration on a number of issues like immigration. Recently the Republicans attached amendments to the needed highway bill, the amendments would do away with the regulations for banks in America. Some of the same banks that brought on the economic collapse in 2008.

A lot of Americans would like to have a job where they only work 111 days a year and get paid $174,000 plus benefits so that they can enjoy family time. Many of the people who serve in Congress are millionaires in their own right and it appears that some Democrats and most Republicans will do the bidding of their corporate sponsors to enrich them at the expense of working families.

In my opinion it is time to turn these corporate candidates out of office. It is time to put a stop to the obscene amount of money in our politics and the gerrymandering that goes on in many states.

In my opinion if Americans do not wake up and stop voting against their economic self interests and keep electing these candidates that are bought and paid for by the corporations that use issues like God, guns and gays to distract voters from their real purpose things will be worse and not better in this country.
