The Missourians, a Dickens-style caroling group, is beginning its 29th and final season in December.

The group, directed by Suzie Nichols, has performed in the Central Missouri area and have provided more than $85,000 in scholarships to members of University Singers at the University of Missouri.

Many of the members are former members of the University Singers and perform to give back to their alma mater and the organization that helped enhance their college and adult lives.

This season The Missourians are offering to perform a free concert in area churches. They will waive their usual fees if they are permitted to collect donations after the concerts. Contact Nichols at 573-761-7466 to arrange an appearance.

As the last season is almost upon them, some members shared feelings about the past years and performing.

Nichols said the group began when she and her family went to Disney World and saw a group singing carols in costume.

"It looked like fun and I came back to Jefferson City and decided to start a similar group. It began with eight people and grew each year. We performed about five shows at first and this grew each year as well.

"At first, we rented costumes and then we began to purchase and make our own costumes. It has been a nice run and the people have been very supportive. It has made my Christmas each year. I have worked with a nice group of people."

According to Carol Beach, this final season has been filled with mixed feelings.

"I love to sing and this was a unique group because of the costumes and an opportunity to sing with a group above average because of the vocal talent. To go and perform and make parties and events more fun has been great. To see faces of those we entertained when they recognized a song was wonderful. Our daughter received a scholarship from the organization that we support."

Lynn Peters said, "It has been a part of my life for almost 30 years and it's kind of like having a child going out into the world. The end is bittersweet. It is hard to do all of the shows in a season but it has always been fun and we have had a good reaction. It's time to end but I realize I won't see some members again."

According to Melinda Peak, "The 29 years have been a highlight of the holiday season for me. I will miss it and hope to stay in touch with the friends I have made. It has been an honor to perform with them. I looked forward to it every year. It is a well rounded group - good, kind and helping people enjoying our talents and the music.

"I have been blessed with it."

Dudley Galloway said, "I have been with the group since 1999 and was honored to have been asked to be in the group. Working with Suzie Nichols has always been an adventure. She knows what she wants and goes out to get it."

The group is trying to make the last season a special one and to honor Nichols for all her work.
