Press Box: Weighing in on some aspects of Missouri's odd week

News Tribune Sports Commentary

There have been less interesting weeks.

First there was last Saturday night's tweet from a group of Missouri football players supporting the Concerned Student 1950 protesters.

Then came Sunday's tweet from head coach Gary Pinkel, supporting his players.

Then came Monday's resignations of the university system president and chancellor.

And then Friday's bombshell announcement Pinkel will be stepping down at the end of the season due to health reasons.

Stick to sports? This has everything to do with sports.

Sports is the front door to almost every major university in the United States. When a school's sports team does well, enrollment goes up.

I'm not going to go through a total rehash of all of the events of the last seven days. But there are a few things I want to address.

There has been written speculation the reason Missouri settled so quickly was it didn't want to pay the $1-million forfeit fee to BYU. I don't buy that for a second.

With it being such a unique situation, I don't believe BYU would have asked for it, much less taken it. Missouri just could have taken a couple of trips for games to Provo, Utah, in the next decade or so and that would have more than settled it.

If you think the $1 million was the end-all and be-all, I am going to guess that university fundraisers are going to have to answer more than a few questions during the next few months when they make calls looking for cash. That $1 million will likely pale in comparison to the potential drop in donations from supporters upset about how things were handled.

Even if you don't donate, you may buy tickets. I know people who had tickets to Saturday night's game with BYU at Arrowhead Stadium that didn't attend because of the way things were handled. And while they have season tickets, they aren't planning on attending next Saturday night's home finale against Tennessee at Faurot Field. And I'm sure they will think long and hard about renewing their tickets.

They're making their feelings known with their backsides. Or lack thereof in the seats. Those fans are likely going to be hard to get back, at least anytime soon. And that money adds up.

Then there's the feeling the players wouldn't have done this if the Tigers had a record of 9-0, not 4-5. At 9-0, they would have had bigger things to play for instead of hoping to maybe have the potential of a bowl trip to Birmingham, Ala., or Shreveport, La.

Or maybe at 9-0, their decision to boycott team activities would have drawn even more attention to the situation and the ending would have been the same. Only with a lot more of a circus.

That leads me to Pinkel. His tweet Sunday morning, featuring a team picture along with the hashtag #ConcernedStudent1950, who wanted the university system president fired, set off a firestorm.

I hate Twitter. I understand it's become a necessary evil for communication, but getting an idea across in 140 characters or less doesn't leave much room for context.

All Pinkel was doing was supporting his players. He didn't go about it in the best way, he admitted that himself. But if you or I had a child on the team, that's what we would want or expect.

And I don't even want to get into people saying Pinkel's announcement Friday was simply him getting out while the getting was good. Or the jokes about it. The man has lymphoma, a potentially fatal disease. He made a decision he thinks is best for himself and his family.

Through the years, I've gotten to know a handful of gentlemen who have played for Pinkel. They know Pinkel better than I, or you, do. They're standing by him. And from what I know of his former players, that's good enough for me.

Just a week ago, there were arguments about whether Pinkel is the best football coach in Missouri's history. Nothing on the field has changed.

But because of what happened in the last week, there's more room on the Gary Pinkel bandwagon than there was when November started. That just leaves me a better chance to stretch out.
