The story of a priest and deacon is told in the play "Mass Appeal," written by Bill C. Davis and produced by Capital City Players.

The play was made into a movie in the early '80s and starred Jack Lemon. Since then, it has been relatively dormant.

Director Audie Cline labeled the play as a comedy-drama.

It is a two-character show starring Ken Thompson as Fr. Tim Farley and Jerico Whitaker as Deacon Mark Dolson.

Fr. Farley is a priest who parishioners like, and this pleases him. He tries to please the parish.

Deacon Dolson is a young priest who questions the way things are in the church, which leads to a conflict between the two and the basis of the story.

There are parts of the show that reveal the personal lives of both men, which helps explain why they believe the things that they believe.

As the play progresses, the bishop steps in to make Dolson into the priest he feels he should be.

"We needed to concentrate on character development, which will be a strong addition and won't take away from the plot of the show," Cline said.

Cline also said that the show is relevant today with the new pope in Rome who also questions why the church does certain things.

"It is a show about the Catholic faith but many of the same arguments and challenges are present in all denominations," Cline said.

"Mass Appeal" is Nov. 13-15 and 19-22. Performances Thursdays-Saturdays are at 6:30 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 12:30 p.m. at Shikles Auditorium. Tickets are $35 per person which includes a buffet catered by Argyle Catering. They can be purchased at 573-681-9012 or via capitalcityplayers.com.
