Wednesday marks the 97th anniversary of Armistice Day - the day the fighting of World War I, the "war to end all wars," ended.

The war itself didn't end officially until June 28, 1919, when the Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Palace of Versailles in France.

However, since fighting ended between the Axis and Allies forces on "the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," Nov. 11, 1918, generally is regarded as the end of the war.

The U.S. Veterans Affairs department notes on its history website that President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, saying: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations ... "

The celebrations continued each year.

However, then World War II came along, with its major mobilizations in opposite parts of the world.

Then it was followed by the Korean War and, in 1954, Congress changed the observance of "Armistice" Day to "Veterans" Day, honoring those who are veterans of all wars.

Here's a list of some of the events occurring in the Jefferson City area this Nov. 11:

That program will be followed at 9 a.m. with the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial "By-Way Marker" at Soldiers Hall, 903 Lafayette St.
