Teen performance provides suspense, laughs

Set for this weekend in Jefferson City

"Spirit" is a comedy-drama presented by the JC Home Educators Teen Club that will keep audiences laughing and guessing what will happen next.

The play is filled with rich and diverse characters led by the indomitable "Clara," and will challenge how the elderly are viewed in a lighthearted way.

The plot involves Clara, who has a secret few know about, along with roommate Esther and other Happy Hollow residents Joe, Mr. Dobbins and Alice, who enjoy poker, pepperoni pizza and hula dancing much to the chagrin of the manager, Miss Monroe. As the show progresses, the audience meets Clara's attorney, Les the handyman, and Arby, a kindly staffer. Then there's an attorney and a policewoman. How much trouble can the residents possibly stir up? What's the talk about bankers and a possible sale?

According to Director Stephanie Smith, working with the teens who are the primary decision makers when it comes to scripts chosen is a delightful challenge and learning experience.

For this particular script, the group wanted to accurately portray the elderly characters without resorting to hollow stereotypes. Since all the actors are in their teens, it's been a special challenge for those who play older residents to develop the proper vocal techniques and physical movements.

Smith said the students enjoy working together and develop life-long memories and build friendships while working on these shows.

This is the second year for an autumn production in addition to the annual spring show for the group.

This show is appropriate for all ages. Senior citizens, including groups from churches, clubs and retirement facilities, are invited to attend and enjoy.

"Spirit" is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Jefferson City at Stained Glass Theatre, 800 E. High St. Tickets are $6 and available at 573-645-8790 or the door.
