Missouri has big turkey harvest

The Missouri Department of Conservation announced hunters checked 6,158 turkeys during Missouri's fall firearms turkey season, which wrapped up Saturday after beginning Oct. 1.

That was an increase of almost 500 from last year, when the fall firearms turkey harvest total was 5,680. The top harvest counties for this season were Dent with 210, Greene with 159 and Franklin with 148.

A total of 99 turkeys were taken in Cole County, with 109 taken in Callaway and 116 in Osage. Other area county totals included 90 in Miller, 58 in Moniteau, 91 in Morgan and 150 in Maries.

Fall archery turkey hunting continues until Nov. 13 and then resumes again from Nov. 25 and runs through Jan. 15.

MDC also announced hunters ages 6-15 checked 14,095 deer during Missouri's early youth portion of the 2015 deer hunting season, which ran Saturday and Sunday.

The top counties for the early youth portion were Franklin with 338 deer checked, Osage with 337 and Howell with 288. Last year's harvest total for the early youth portion was 18,091.

Other area county totals included 210 in Callaway, 114 in Cole, 181 in Maries, 177 in Miller and 186 in Morgan,

The total for the firearms deer urban zone portion, which ran Oct. 9-12, was 401 with the top three counties being Greene with 106, Jefferson with 57 and St. Charles with 43. The 2014 total for the firearms deer urban zone portion was 599.

Archery deer hunting continues through Nov. 13 and then again from Nov. 25 though Jan. 15.

Up next for deer hunting in Missouri is the November portion of firearms deer season, which runs Nov. 14-24. That will be followed by the firearms deer antlerless portion from Nov. 25-Dec. 6. The firearms deer alternative methods portion will run Dec. 19-29, followed by firearms deer late youth portion Jan. 2-3.
