Records fall at track and field championships

On Friday

It was an odd day for records on the opening day of the Class 3-5 Missouri State High School Activities Association Track and Field Championships.

With the creation of a new class this season, every winning mark in a final or top qualifying time in a Class 5 event set a record Friday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

But there were some other notable accomplishments, including three new all-classes records, two of them by Grandview's Anglerne Annelus.

Annelus got started early in the day, breaking the all-classes record while winning her preliminary heat of the Class 4 girls 100-meter dash in a time of 11.64. That broke the mark of 11.66 set by Muna Lee of Kansas City Central in 1999.

She then pulled off the feat again, this time in a prelim for the 200-meter dash. Annelus raced to the finish line in a time of 23.47, breaking the all-classes mark of 23.78 set by Berkeley's Alishea Usery in 2007.

That was bad news for Lutheran South's Maya Cody, running one heat after Annelus. Cody put up a time of 23.76 while winning Heat 2, good enough to top Usery's record, but not good enough to beat the mark set by Annelus moments earlier.

Christopher Nilsen of Park Hill set the final all-classes record of the day while winning the Class 5 boys pole vault with a mark of 17-0. The broke the old record of 16-9 set by Mount Vernon's Bruce Dial in 1993.

Three athletes defended their titles in events Friday, although in a different class.

In the Class 5 boys discus, Carlos Davis of Blue Springs was a champion after taking the Class 4 title last year.

The Class 5 boys triple jump champion was Blue Springs' Jacob Peister, who claimed the title last year in Class 4.

Daylan Quinn of Liberty: Mountain View won the Class 3 boys 1,600-meter run one year after winning the event in Class 2. Quinn was a double-winner on the day, as he also took first in the 800-meter run.
