Dear Editor:
Sorry public, but I feel the need to reply to Mr. Horstmann's letter published May 24 with the headline "War continues on Christians."
Horstmann again has his knickers in a knot about the poor discriminated against Christians. He apparently swallows bait from the Breitbart "newsfeed" hook, line, and sinker, and then gets all worked up over the silly stories (that are blown out of proportion, misrepresented, or have been cherry picked of specific factoids, probably on purpose by the "editors.")
It took 34 seconds for me to validate online that the Breitbart news story was junk. Yes, there was a lawsuit filed in 2011 by the "lawsuit hampster" John Banzhaf complaining about the poor Muslims being discriminated against at the Catholic University. However, there were never any Muslims involved. Not one. Ever.
A quote from the rumor control website Snopes: "Bottom line: It's wrong to characterize this case as it currently stands as a complaint from intolerant Muslim students at Catholic University when in fact it's a complaint filed by a know-it-all from academia who thinks dividing people is the best way to unite them."
Given the facts of this case, Horstmann is seriously off base trumpeting that "the war on Christians continues." One idiot generating lawsuits does not indicate a war is being waged.
To further quote Horstmann's letter, "It's unbelievable to me how our president and his willing accomplices, the mainstream media, are either so blind, naïve or willing to disregard the facts and ignore the greatest threat to this country possibly since the revolution. We are as weak economically and morally as we ever have been which is like exposing our underbelly to one of the most aggressive, determined and resourceful enemies we've ever encountered."
It's unbelievable to me that right wing conservatives have the chutzpah to trumpet this garbage, using half-baked concepts and cherry picking factoids to make their cases. The simple truth is that the right wing garbage being continually spewed by Breitbart needs a healthy dose of skepticism.
Christians, there is no "war" being waged upon you in the hemisphere of this earth we live upon. Now the Middle East, perhaps. But that is an entirely different kettle of fish.
Check a fact or two in the future perhaps, Mr. Horstmann?
