St. Elizabeth's Juergensmeyer to be inducted Wednesday

Diane Juergensmeyer, the longtime head softball coach at St. Elizabeth High School, will be inducted Wednesday into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Springfield.

Juergemseyer led the Lady Hornets to Class 1 state titles in 1992, 1994 and 2002 and was an assistant on the St. Elizabeth team that won it all in 2011.

She coached St. Elizabeth to 489 victories from 1980-2010, including 358 in the fall championship seasons.

The St. Elizabeth native graduated high school in 1976, playing on the first softball teams fielded by the Lady Hornets.

St. Elizabeth, which won its first district title in 1985, advanced to the Class 1 Final Four five times from 1991-97. The Lady Hornets were second in 1993 and 1997 and fourth in 1991.

Also slated for induction Wednesday are:

• Byron Hagler, who won nearly 600 games and reached nine Final Fours as head baseball coach at Licking and Hillcrest High Schools.

• Roy Burlison, a former fastpitch softball standout who played in St. Louis and Springfield.

• The Diamond 9, a group of baseball and softball standouts from the Springfield area.

In addtion, former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will be honored as a Missouri Sports Legend.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the University Plaza Convention Center in Springfield. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame at (417) 889-3100.
