Brentwood's Rivera sets Missouri mark in shot put

Sophia Rivera of Brentwood put up a shot put series for the ages in Saturday's action at the Class 1-2 Missouri State High School Activities Association Track and Field Championships in Jefferson City.

Competing at Lincoln University's Dwight T. Reed Stadium one day after winning the Class 2 discus crown, Rivera followed it up with a title in the shot put. The junior put up six great marks in the shot put, as she not only broke the all-classes record of 47-73/4 set by Blue Springs' Valeyta Althouse in 1992, but bettered that distance on every attempt.

Rivera broke the record with a heave of 50-83/4 on her first attempt, then followed it up with the new standard of 51-11/4. On her final four attempts, she recorded marks of 50-11/2, 49-51/2, 48-2 and 48-2.

It was the third straight state title in the event for Rivera.

Among other Class 2 girls, Crane's Emma Lander tied a class record while repeating as winner of the triple jump, as her distance of 37-111/4 matched the mark set by Clark County's Courtney Shuman in 2007.

Two others joined Rivera as double-winners, as Penney's Morgan Prather took first in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, while Father Tolton's Rachel Selva won the 1,600-meter run Saturday after winning Friday's 3,200-meter run.

In addition, Carlie Queen of Summit Christian Academy repeated as high jump champion.

Father Tolton won the team title with 65 points, while the others to claim team trophies for a top-four finish were Penney (44), Plattsburg (41) and Bishop LeBlond (31).

Among the Class 2 boys, Austin Corley of Adrian broke the class record in the 300-meter hurdles with his winning time of 37.25. That beat the mark of 37.89 he put up in Friday's preliminary race. He won the event for the second straight year and became a triple-winner, as he also took first Saturday in the 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.

Sarcoxie's Lath Kisling was a triple-winner for the weekend. After winning the triple jump Friday, he won the long jump and high jump Saturday.

Skyline won the team title with 67 and was followed by Monroe City (56), Adrian (41.5) and Kelley (31).

In the Class 1 boys portion of the meet, La Plata's Seth Brown pulled off a three-peat by taking the title in the 3,200-meter run for the third straight year.

Maximillian Carrillo of St. Joseph Christian repeated as the champion in the discus.

There were three double-winners. Stanberry's Dustin Ellis won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, Winston's Jordan Leonard took first in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and Rich Hill's Bryant Courter won the triple jump after taking first in Friday's long jump.

Hardin-Central won the championship with 72 team points, while the rest of the top four was made up of Salisbury (56), Rich Hill (37.5) and Lutheran: Kansas City (36).

Among the Class 1 girls, Mound City's Emily Wedlock pulled off a pair of three-peats, as the junior won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles for the third straight year.

Dora's Ashlynn Vanatter was a triple-winner, taking first in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, while New Covenant Academy's Claire Workman was a repeat winner in both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Workman ended up as a triple-winner for the weekend, as she added those titles to her crown in Friday's 3,200-meter run.

Orrick's Samantha Fulte repeated as the long jump champion and became a double-winner, as she took first in Friday's triple jump.

North Harrison's Haley Craig pulled off a similar feat, as she repeated as the champ in the discus, one day after winning the shot put.

New Covenant Academy snagged the team title with 51 points, while Jasper was a close second with 44. Mound City took third with 38 and New Haven was fourth with 34.
