Man gets 7 years for 2013 shooting

A Columbia man has been sentenced to seven years for his role in a 2013 Jefferson City shooting.

Channing Tyler Williams, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm before Cole County Judge Jon Beetem.

His sentence will run concurrent with any other sentence against him.

Williams had been charged with discharging a firearm and armed criminal action.

While what exactly led to the October 2013 shooting has not been made clear, Jefferson City police reports show the emergency communications center began receiving calls to respond to 1425 Missouri Blvd. for a shooting victim.

When officers arrived on the scene, they determined that the victim, a 19-year-old Columbia resident, had been struck by gunfire and was suffering from a single wound to the back.

The initial investigation determined the shooting did not occur at the business, but in the 1500 block of Edmonds Street. The victim had gone to the business to seek help.

Officers responded to the Edmonds Street area and located evidence consistent with the victim's story. They determined several rounds were fired in the area, but could find no other victims.
