Singers to honor 70th anniversary of end of WWII

The Monticello Singers are giving a concert to honor the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and those veterans who served the nation in European, African or Pacific theaters of operations in World War II at 3 p.m. Monday in the Capitol Rotunda.

The music selections for the concert by the group's director, Cindy McClain, are a mix of familiar patriotic songs, songs of inspiration, songs of family and friendship, and a few new songs designed for the uniqueness of the Capitol Rotunda setting.

A new arrangement of the song "Ship of State" was selected to honor Sir Winston Churchill and the "Navy Hymn" is sung in memory of Jefferson City resident Laughton Smith who was lost at sea with the crew of the USS Scorpion on Memorial Day weekend in 1968 during the Cold War.

Other songs include: "God Bless America" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
