For The People Pow Wow to be held this weekend

The eighth annual For The People Pow Wow will be held at the Jefferson City Jaycees Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday.

Larry Sellers from "Dr. Quinn - Medicine Woman" will be the special guest. The pow wow is sponsored by The Society for the Preservation of Traditional Values and the local Jaycees.

Native American art and food vendors will be set up in a comfortable, indoor facility.

Events begin at noon Saturday with a gourd dance. The grand entry will be held at 2:30 p.m. Gourd dancing will resume at 5:45 p.m. and another grand entry will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Gourd dancing will begin again at noon Sunday.

Master of ceremonies will be Ed Smith, an Osage descendant, from Overland Park, Kan.

Head man dancer will be Randy Falcon from Springfield, who is of the Navajo and Ottawa tribes. Head lady dancer is Renelle Lee from Knob Noster. And Head gourd dancer will be Preston Tone-Pah-Hote, a Kiowa storyteller and traditional dancer from Orrick.

Visitors are welcome at intertribal pow wows, organizers said. However, guests are requested to be watchful and respectful.

Cost is $3 for adults, $1 for school-aged and free to elders and preschool.

Visitors should bring their own seating.

Other area pow wows scheduled this summer include the Osage River Pow Wow, June 19-21 in Tuscumbia; the Robert Woolery Sr. Memorial Pow Wow, July 17-19 in Sedalia; the Indian Council of Many Nations 53rd Annual Summer PowWow, Aug. 22-23 in Grain Valley; and the Red Star Intertribal gourd Dance Society's 12th Annual Ancestors Memorial Gourd Dance and Pow Wow Oct. 17 in Clinton.
