East School students honored

Jefferson City's East Elementary School celebrated its successes as well as promoting its fifth-grade students Wednesday at the Etta and Joseph Miller Performing Arts Center.

The Success Room was added this school year to provide students with strategies to become successful learners with character, said teacher Delora Scaggs. It provides students and teachers with extra assistance and guidance to help students gain alternative behaviors to do better in the classroom and in life, she said.

The SOAR Achievement Award was created to recognize a student who represented the hoped-for success and exhibited the most overall change using the program. Isaly Canady-Henderson received the award for making at or above 80 percent of his goal, maintained behavior after fading out of the program, and had 95 percent attendance.

East School also created the Saundra Allen Leadership Award in honor of the beloved former art teacher, who retired in 2009. Jozalyn Carey and Josh Gonzalez-Lopez were named the first recipients.

This award was the idea of the newly-formed Student Leadership Council. Fifth-graders known for their citizenship, academics and leadership were paired with younger students to encourage good behavior and character.

And, the school recognized Fabian Sidney Woodward for perfect attendance kindergarten through fifth grade.
