Jays' Clausen repeats as district tennis champ

COLUMBIA - It was a repeat championship performance for David Clausen.

The Jefferson City High School senior captured his second consecutive district singles tennis championship Monday, losing just one game in his three matches.

Clausen opened with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories before topping Ashwan Elangovan of Rock Bridge 6-1, 6-1 for the title.

Clausen will now face Robert Osborne of Waynesville in the sectionals today for the opportunity to advance to the Class 2 individual state tournament later this month in Springfield.

The sectional singles match is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start in Columbia.

David Steinmeyer of the Jays finished third in the singles tournament Monday. He opened with a 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) victory before falling to Elangovan 2-6, 3-6 in the semifinals. Steinmeyer then bested Mickey Hua of Hickman 10-8 in the third-place match.

The Jays had a pair of doubles teams in action Monday.

The team of Spencer Bone and Isaac Roling finished fourth. The duo opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win before falling 1-6, 3-6 in the semifinals and 4-6, 2-6 in the third-place match.

Dane Biesemeyer and Joey Mendez went 1-1 on Monday. The team was a 6-3, 6-0 winner in its first match before falling 2-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals.
